Within the manufacturing industry, gas is a key resource – the most important applications being welding and cutting. There are continuous technological improvements and developments – new gases, equipment, methods and techniques. In close cooperation with our customers, we have significantly contributed to these developments.
Joining metal together – welding
In order to build a girder for a bridge or a house, a car, or anything else using metal, the metal parts must be joined together, i.e. welded. There are five various welding processes involving gas:
- MIG/MAG welding
The MIG/MAG method is steadily increasing in use, and is now the most common welding method in Western Europe, USA and Japan.
- TIG welding
TIG welding is particularly suited to thin materials and small components. The process is suitable for most materials.
- Gas welding
Often used for welding pipes or when it is difficult to obtain electric supply. Acetylene and oxygen are used.
- Laser
Used for welding small details in the electronics industry or where high welding speeds are required, e.g. in the automotive industry.
- Plasma
Used when the highest quality is required, and for mechanised welding processes. Not suitable for manual welding.
Special shielding gases used during TIG and MIG/MAG welding help achieve both a better working environment for the welder, reducing the amount of dangerous ozone generated, and an improvement in quality and increased productivity. One example of a shielding gas is MISON®.
