Lens Pendulum Lightships pose a special problem. When a lightship moves in the sea, the light is sometimes thrown downwards into the water and sometimes upwards towards the sky. At a distance it becomes impossible to discern the true character of the light. Gustaf Dalén’s lens pendulum, developed in 1915, points the light horizontally regardless of the movement of the ship.
